Recent Successes

Sileby members have seen successes in competitions in recent months.

Three members had work accepted for the North and East Midlands Photographic Federation (NEMPF) Exhibition 2025Mandy Sherrington had two colour prints accepted and Pete Smith scored with three colour prints and one projected image.  Colin Machin picked up a Selector’s Award for a colour print in the Nature section.  This is where each judge (selector) is asked to choose his or her favourite picture in each category.

Although listed as representing Rolls-Royce Camera Club (Derby) in the NEMPF Exhibition, our own Gianpiero Ferrari also picked up a Selector’s Award for a Nature colour print.  Morally, we can claim that two of the three Nature Selector’s Awards for prints came Sileby’s way; something of a triumph, really.

The Print Exhibition is held at Patching Art Centre near Calverton in Nottinghamshire from Saturday 11 January until Sunday 23rd February 2025.  The projected images tour the region in a recorded show, which we shall be hosting at Sileby in the 2025 season.

In the Society of International Nature and Wildlife Photographers (SIMWP) Bird Photographer of the Year competition, Gianpiero Ferrari saw two of his entries gain Commended awards and a further one pick up a Highly Commended.  Colin Machin also had one of his entries Highly Commended.

A New Season Starts: Smartphones at the Ready ... Again

The 2024-25 season kicks off in September, when we hope to welcome members, old and

new, to our new season of meetings.  As usual, we have a varied programme for you to enjoy, with something to interest everyone.

We have a number of interesting print talks scheduled.  It's often said that prints are the best medium for expressing our art, but there are fewer people still printing in sufficient volume to be able to put together a show.  We have, nonetheless, managed to book a good range of print talks.

Following on from last year's venture into the world of Smartphone Photography, this year's Graham Johnson 12-Shot Challenge, is again based entirely on pictures taken with smartphones.  There is a new twist this year, though.  Instead of the club specifying the subjects of the twelve pictures, members have been invited to submit twelve pictures on a theme of their own choosing.

The competition is judged this year by Malcolm Sales, who gave us a talk last year on how to make the best of the features offered by smartphones and judged last year's competition.  Hopefully, he'll be able to report an improvement in the results.

Please note that we meet from 7.15 for a 7.30pm start at St. Mary's Centre on Mountsorrel Lane in Sileby.  It's on the opposite side and about 75 yards down from the church gate.

Jackie Cornes

It is with great sadness that we report the death of long-standing Sileby member Jackie Cornes on 27 December.  Together with her husband, Bob, she had been attending SPS meetings since the early 1990s.

Jacie Cornes, who died 27 December 2023

Jackie had been suffering for some considerable time with rheumatoid arthritis, which eventually confined her to a mobility scooter.  She ultimately succumbed to pneumonia and died peacefully in hospital.  Members have been paying tribute to Jackie.

"Jackie was a wonderful example to us all in the way she remained cheerful in spite of all her problems."

"Jackie was a lovely lady with a gorgeous smile and lovely eyes.  She talked with her eyes."

Our thoughts are with Bob.
